During my work and personal life I get asked so many questions about female health and fertility. It occurred to me that support services for fertility and PCOS are limited and yet the journeys can be long term and often challenging and so Women’s Health - Back to Basics was born!
I wanted to create Women’s Health back to Basics to develop a support network and learning platform that aims to educate women about their gynecological health and fertility, cutting out the noise and bringing the information back to basics.
I became a registered adult nurse in 2008, graduating from Coventry University, and initially worked on a vascular ward within the NHS. In 2010, I joined The Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Coventry. Over the past 14 years, I’ve specialised as a fertility nurse in both the NHS and private sectors in a number of different clinics, my roles have included Fertility Sister, egg donation coordinator (UK and overseas), surrogacy coordinator, and nurse consultant for an ovulation monitor digital company. I also learnt a number of skills along the way including performing IUI, endometrial biopsy and surgical sperm retrieval. I later advanced to become the Nurse Manager for Care Fertility Birmingham and its satellite clinic in Tamworth.
Currently, I serve as the Deputy Director of Nursing for Peppy Health, a digital platform focused on supporting and educating employees about fertility, women’s health, menopause, pregnancy, parenthood, and men’s health. Additionally, I’m the Deputy Chair of the Royal College of Nursing Fertility Nurse Forum committee (RCN), where we create publications and seminars to further educate fertility nurses across the UK. I’m also an active member of the British Fertility Society (BFS) and the Senior Infertility Nursing Group (SING).
My mission is to support couples, individuals and groups through fertility journeys and help women to understand hormonal conditions like PCOS. I also have a particular interest in male fertility.
I’ve contributed to articles for IVF Babble, Baby Magazine, and The Nursing Standard, and have presented at several conferences. Most recently, I spoke at Fertility 2024 on behalf of the RCN about our latest Male Factor Fertility publication, which I co-authored and chaired. I was also invited to discuss PCOS and fertility with the IVF network.
But it’s not all about my professional experience………
My interest in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is deeply personal. Diagnosed with PCOS at 16 and told that starting a family might be challenging and then not much else, I was determined to learn more about the condition and how to manage it. At 16, though, I didn't think much of it—life was about friends, parties, and university, so I was put on the pill and I carried on.
Sadly over the years since diagnosis I experienced a number of the horrible symptoms of PCOS, which originally led to my diagnosis in the first place and ultimately some very low and bad times for me.
You can read all about my journey in my blog.
When I reached my very early twenties I started working in fertility and I met my husband. My fertility became more apparent and that is when I started to really focus on PCOS and how it can be managed. As well as supporting others on their Fertility and PCOS journeys, whether that is together or as separate issues.
I want to help others to understand what the condition is and how it can be managed as well as learning to understand their reproductive health.
Outside of work I do have a number of hobbies! I love to play rugby, I am a member of a local Women’s contact rugby team and a member of a mixed touch rugby team, and we always have a great laugh.
I also enjoy music and going to gigs and festivals. Download is our favorite, although my camping days are behind me! I enjoy horse riding and strength training.
I have a lovely husband and son and 2 fab dogs who I love spending time with and going on adventures with.
I love to try new things and have given roller derby and even fire eating a go!
“My consultation with Anne was so much more helpful and informative than I was expecting. Additionally, she was really warm and caring. A really positive experience.”
